Well, it’s the answer to life, the universe and everything of course! It’s just that the question wasn’t phrased carefully enough… I love that book, have you read it?
It happens more than you think in science – you do an experiment to answer a question you thought of and the answer is – erm – cryptic. So you plan a better one and do it again.
It points out that although Douglas Adams chose that number as a joke, infact 42 has played a significant role in history -my favorite from it is Cricket has 42 laws – but these are only noticed becuase someone took the time and effort to look for things associated with 42. You could probably draw up a similar list for any other number
