Hi gpap. The sky id blue because of the Ozone layer. Ozone is a chemical with the formula O3 that surrounds the earth and blocks out harmful UV radiation from the sun. Without it the sky would be a completely different colour but we would all get sunburn everytime we went outside!

      Hi gpap08,

It’s because light bounces off particles in the air, and high energy blue light bounces off more than low energy red light does. So when you look away from the sun, at the sky, what you see is the blue light that has bounced off particles in the air, and towards you!

That’s also why sunsets are red/orange – if you look at the sun at sunset, all the blue light has bounced away in other directions and only the red light makes it all the way to you!

      🙂
      Sarah
