Hi coops666, great question! Although you should NEVER try setting fire to batteries because they WILL explode. Ordinary batteries that you find in remote controls and car batteries contain an acid called sulfuric acid. This is not flammable on its own but if it escapes from the battery it can react with metals and other substances to produce hydrogen gas which is flammable. It will also makes another toxic gas called sulfur dioxide. I hope this answers your question.

Hi Coops666,that would be an incredibly dangerous experiment to try, so please don’t! As Will has said, heat will generate lots of gas inside the battery, and lots of gas compressed in a metal container generates an almighty bang when the pressure gets high enough to blow the metal container apart. Even worse when all the gas created is flammable!
