      In order for things to melt you need to break the forces that hold the molecules in that thing together to allow them to mix with the water molecules and make new bonds with them.
      So when you put a marshmellow in a hot drink, the energy provided by the heat allows the bonds in the marshmellow tobreak and its molecules to move around and mix with the water molelues and thereby melt
